❓ Frequently Asked Questions

The biggest change is the introduction of mandatory vocational training. Every JSS student must choose one trade subject, and every SS student continues with that trade as a core subject. This is designed to create employable graduates with practical skills alongside academic knowledge.

Students must choose ONE trade subject from these six options:
  • Solar Photovoltaic Installation & Maintenance
  • Fashion Design & Garment Making
  • Livestock Farming
  • Beauty & Cosmetology
  • Computer Hardware & GSM Repairs
  • Horticulture & Crop Production

The new curriculum is set for nationwide implementation starting from the 2025/2026 academic session across all public and private schools in Nigeria. The implementation timeline includes pilot testing in early 2025, followed by full rollout.

Students choose their trade subject in JSS 1 and continue with the same trade throughout their secondary education (JSS 1-3 and SSS 1-3). This ensures they develop expertise in their chosen field over the 6-year period.

All SSS students must take these 5 core subjects:
  • English Language
  • General Mathematics
  • One Trade Subject (Mandatory - same as JSS choice)
  • Citizenship and Heritage Studies
  • Digital Technologies
They then specialize in Science, Humanities, or Business fields.

JSS students will take 12-14 subjects total:
  • 10 Core subjects (English Studies, Mathematics, Nigerian Languages, Intermediate Science, PHE, Digital Technologies, CRS/IS, Nigerian History, Social and Citizenship Studies, CCA)
  • 1 Mandatory Trade Subject
  • 1-3 Optional Subjects (Business Studies, French, Arabic)

Key new additions include:
  • Digital Technologies: Now a core subject from Primary 4
  • Nigerian History: Standalone subject from primary school
  • Citizenship Studies: New standalone subject
  • Trade Subjects: 6 mandatory vocational options

The new curriculum is designed to prepare students for both university education and immediate employment. Students will still take traditional academic subjects alongside their trade subjects, ensuring they meet university admission requirements while also having practical skills.
